Migraine Sufferers Should Seek A Neurologist

All over the world people are affected by migraines every day. Migraines are a medical disorder that falls under the neurology branch of medicine. A neurologist diagnoses, treats, and often times researches neurological diseases and disorder. They study and treat the central and peripheral nervous systems. This includes your nerves, your brain, your muscles, your blood vessels and the list goes on and on. Neurosurgeons are different than neurologists as neither are qualified to do the others work without the right training. And neuroscience is also different as it studies all qualities of the nervous system not just the medical implementations.

Headaches are much different than migraines according to a headache specialist. Migraines are what you would think of a headache but much much worse. The pain is much greater and it can last a lot longer. There have been connections to environmental and genetic factors which may cause migraines in a person or family.

Migraines usually only happen on one part of your head. Sometimes the person will feel the extreme pain on one side of their head or even in a specific point. The pain is described to come in waves and the waves intensify the worse the migraine gets. These can last anywhere from a couple of hours to a day and a half. This is one reason why chronic migraine sufferers have had such devastating effects to their personal lives due to this disorder. There is also a thing called an aura that has been reported in around one third of migraine cases. This aura is a visual or auditory cue that happens before a migraine is about to start. There has been no explanation as to why or how this happens.

For about two thirds of severe headaches patients there is a history of migraines in their family. This leads scientists and neurologists to believe that there is a connection to genetics. As of now there is still no concrete cause of migraines. Most neurologists believe it is a neurovascular disorder. This is what causes your pain neurons to lose control and cause so much pain.

A neurologist can be kind of hard to find so if you suffer from migraines you should go see a doctor first. They will be able to help diagnose you better and will be able to give you information on how to try and treat your migraines. If this does not help than they will suggest a neurologist for you to see.
